Habits of Mind

There are many types of Habits of Mind lessons to know about, but there are three of them I am going to tell you about. First one is to Apply past Knowledge to New Situations. This strategy is for thoughts that think of a situation beforehand and improve the situation further from happening and to a different situation. I think I have used this habit of mind but a way I can use this is in school. I can study before a test and improve my grade. Next, is Persisting this is seeing success through failure. Failing in something is a good thing I believe it shows character if you look at failure in a good way. I have used this before in a baseball game if you strike out first time at bat there’s always the next time you come back up to bat and get a hit. Then you’ve succeeded from failing the first time. Last of the Habits is Striving for Accuracy. This Habit of Mind is not to be the best but to try and improve on your own. My math skills aren’t very good and nether is my reading skill or my writing. But I use this strategy at school not to be the best because I’m not. But to improve in math, reading, and writing for myself is all that matters. These are the three types of Habits of Mind that I used before and will continue on using them to become a better person to succeed in the near future.

Things I’d Carry

There are many things that are important to me that I would carry in my backpack. The things I must carry is cherished necessities. Most of them is school supplies and homework and their important to me to be successful in life and to carry on to finishing my education. But the most important things are photos of my family and my girlfriend. Because both mean a lot to me my family being there from the start and my girlfriend is also always there for me whenever I need advice. Both will always push me to for what is the right thing to do and I enjoy there company. My second important thing I must carry is my sketch book. My sketch book keeps me calm whenever I choose to draw. What I like about drawing is when someone complements my drawings and likes it, it means to me that I am getting better at it and improving step by step. When I begin to draw, I bloke out reality and I’m focused on every single line because once you looked away from your paper you will forget what you wanted to draw and be stuck. My third and final item that is important to me is to carry my future in my backpack. My future is important to me because without any other important thing in my back my future wouldn’t exist. All my things are important to me that lead up to my future of success, everything is important to me so I can be a better person and a student. We fight battles every day we just don’t know it because there easy but when we do we try our best we can to succeed.

Vocab

Profound Adj

"The guy's dead, he kept saying, which seemed profound, the guy's dead" (pg 12.) The type of context clue that helps me was "example", "The guy's dead" said repeatedly helped me understand the meaning of profound to be something deep involving feeling. Sentence: He felt grief when his grandma died.

Entrench Verb

"He used his entrenching tool like an ax, slashing, felling both love and hate..." (pg 16)
Example in the sentence like "slashing" and "love and hate" helped me to understand entrench to be a strength and firmness word. Sentence: She safely entrenched behind the realistic truth.

Resignation Noun

"Some carried themselves with a sort of wistful resignation, others with pride..." (pg 19)
Antonym in the sentence is "pride" it helped me conclude that the word resignation would have something to do with being weak, like giving up. Sentence: President Nixon resigned because of the fear of getting tried and going to jail.
